Overview[]
Monkey Men are beast-like men from Mongo, who are used to fight in the arena in Ming's palace. They hail from southern Mongo and are a rather primitive tribal race living in jungle huts.
Comic strip[]
Four monkey men fight Flash Gordon in the Flash Gordon (comic strip). Flash, stripped to his underwear, beats all 4 with his bare hands in a matter of moments. The monkey men are reddish-orange, and wear shorts.
Serials[]
Three monkey men fight Flash in the arena in Ming's palace in Chapter 101: The Planet of Peril of the "Flash Gordon (serial)" serial. The monkey men look more or less like human wrestlers, but they make funny faces, and 2 out of 3 of them have fangs. They don't win. 2 of the 3 were performed by wrestlers Bull Montana and Constantine Romanoff.
"Zeitgeist" and "The Rise of Ming"[]
2013 graphic novels Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist by Eric Trautmann and Merciless: The Rise of Ming by Scott Beatty depict both Monkey Men and Ape Men as red-furred savage warrior races of anthropoids, some having gorilla-like features, others appearing rather "Orc-" or "Goblin-like" as squat, pointy eared humanoids with large fangs or tusks.
